Alberta Opens a New Pathway to Immigration for Religious Workers

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is designed for people who want to immigrate to Alberta. The program offers a pathway for newcomers with diverse backgrounds and skillsets who are committed to making a difference in their new home province.

Now, Alberta has launched a new pathway for religious new comers from foreign nations to meet the spiritual needs of people who live in Alberta.

Professional immigrants from religious organizations are now eligible to work and settle in Alberta. Now, it is possible for new religious professionals who can apply through the Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS), Alberta Express Entry Stream, and Alberta Rural Renewal Stream.

Requirements

·    A job offer from an Alberta-based religious organization is required, as well as the existing language (English or French), educational, and wages criteria.

In Alberta, there are many religious communities from different religions which rely heavily on priests, liturgists, and spiritual leaders from across the world. However, there is currently no clear way for such workers to obtain permanent residency, which means they must leave the country when their temporary residency period expires after they develop close ties to their communities.

The aim of the Government of Alberta is to attract such workers through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program to promote the betterment of religious organizations.

In light of these changes, Alberta will be aligned with other provinces, such as British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, which permit religious workers to apply through Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

“Many of Alberta’s cultural communities rely on spiritual leadership to help maintain their connection to their roots and to prepare for future challenges. Making it easier for spiritual leaders to come to Alberta is an important step to recognize the needs of immigrants and to help them make a home in our province.” - Kaycee Madu, Alberta Minister of Labour and Immigration.

“Alberta’s diversity is a critical part of our province’s future success. This announcement is another step that Alberta’s government is taking to strengthen our province with newcomers who can support the diverse religious and spiritual practices of Albertans.” -Muhammad Yaseen, Alberta Associate Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism.

Here are some important facts about the program:

  • The Federal-Provincial Program, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, nominates skilled individuals to work and live permanently in the province. Immigrants who are applying under Alberta PNP must have skills to purchase or start a business or fulfil the job shortage and help boost the economy and the growth of the Canadian province of Alberta.
  • It is possible for religious workers to apply for the program under the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the Rural Renewal Stream, and the Alberta Express Entry Stream if the conditions for eligibility must be met before they are eligible.

·     Temporary foreign workers who are currently working in Alberta and have a full-time job offer from an Alberta employer in an appropriate occupation are eligible for the Alberta Opportunity Stream.

·     Individuals who have an offer of job in one of Alberta's designated rural communities are eligible to participate in the Alberta Rural Renewal Stream.

    • Applicants with a strong connection to Alberta or a skill set contributing to the diversification of Alberta's economy are requirements for those interested who can apply under the Alberta Express Entry Stream.
